Alumnus or Alumna?

By Ranjana S.

Richard Tombly is an alumnus of the College of the city of New Jersey.

There are thousands of alumni of City College, which was, until recently, an all male institution.

When some years back City College began to admit women to its halls of learning, a female graduate became an alumna of the college.

City College has produced a small number of alumnae (female graduates) and a large number of alumni(male graduates) in the last five years.

§  Alumnus----male, singular.
§  Alumni----male, plural.(pronounced a-lum- nye)
§  Alumna----female, singular.
§  Alumnae----female, plural.(pronounced a-lum-nee)

Look at the following sentences:

§  He is an alumnus of North Congion University.
§  The alumni of Yale University will conduct their annual meeting next week.
§  She is an alumna of The College of Perry Jordan.
§  The alumnae of The New Butterfly are intelligent young women with good educations.
